Mean-dispersion preferences and constant absolute uncertainty aversion

چکیده
We axiomatize, in an Anscombe-Aumann framework, the class of preferences that admit a representation of the form V (f) = (d), where is the mean utility of the act f with respect to a given probability, d is the vector of state-by-state utility deviations from the mean, and (d) is a measure of (aversion to) dispersion that corresponds to an uncertainty premium. The key feature of these mean-dispersion preferences is that they exhibit constant absolute uncertainty aversion. This class includes many wellknown models of preferences from the literature on ambiguity. We show what properties of the dispersion function ( ) correspond to known models, to probabilistic sophistication, and to some new notions of uncertainty aversion.

Mean - Dispersion Preferences
The starting point for this paper is the variational preference model introduced by Maccheroni et al [2006]), which includes Gilboa-Schmeidler multiple-prior preferences and Hansen-Sargent multiplier preferences. First, we show that any variational preferences admit a `primal' representation with a natural interpretation: a `mean' expected-utility of the act minus a `dispersion measure' that de...
متن کاملA two-parameter model of dispersion aversion
The idea of representing choice under uncertainty as a trade-off between mean returns and some measure of risk or uncertainty is fundamental to the analysis of investment decisions. In this paper, we show that preferences can be characterized in this way, even in the absence of objective probabilities. We develop a model of uncertainty averse preferences that is based on a mean and a measure of...
متن کاملInvariant risk attitudes
Concepts of constant absolute risk aversion and constant relative risk aversion have proved useful in the analysis of choice under uncertainty, but are quite restrictive, particularly when they are imposed jointly. A generalization of constant risk aversion, referred to as invariant risk aversion is developed. Invariant risk aversion is closely related to the possibility of representing prefere...
متن کاملThree representations of preferences with decreasing absolute uncertainty aversion
This paper axiomatizes a class of preferences displaying decreasing absolute uncertainty aversion, which allows a decision maker to be more willing to take uncertaintybearing behavior when he becomes wealthier. In our first main result, we obtain three equivalent representations. The first is a variation on the constraint criterion of Hansen and Sargent (2001). The other two generalize Gilboa a...
متن کاملRisk Premiums and Benefit Measures for Generalized-expected-utility Theories
Over the past fteen years, the theory of choice under uncertainty has undergone radical change. The pivotal contribution was Machinaas (1982) demonstration that a large class of preferences could be locally approximated by expected-utility func-tionals and that global preferences inherited properties, such as risk aversion, of the local utility functions. Less progress has been made, however, i...
